Global and regional trends and trends in road safety, national perceptions and perspectives, as well as mobility and road safety issues for all road users were discussed on 29 May at the roundtable "Leaders on road safety", which is part of the fifth edition of the Global Road Safety Week, which was also joined by the Government of the Republic of Moldova.
Attending the event, Deputy Secretary General of the Government, Adrian Ermurachi, said that the government adopted the issue of road safety as a priority agenda. In 2018, the National Council for Road Traffic Security, a platform within which a string of normative acts were elaborated, contributed to the consolidation of the road traffic safety, in particular, the elaboration of an anti-alcoholic package, which tightens the sanctions against drunkards. Adrian Ermurachi mentioned that the Executive Bureau of the National Road Traffic Safety Council was institutionalized at the end of 2018. It is a coordination centre at the government level, which ensures interaction between central and local authorities, civil society, and development partners.
Regarding the national views and perspectives in the field of road safety, the relevant authorities said that in the future they will focus on training and development of responsible road users' behaviour through programs, trainings, information campaigns; expansion of the Automated Traffic Surveillance System; protection of vulnerable road users; improvement of emergency medical care capabilities and work in conjunction with other specialized emergency services.
In order to make the road safety sector more efficient, it is necessary to develop a new document on road safety policy in line with the global goals of 2030 and the provisions of the National Development Strategy "Moldova 2030", which meets the needs and expectations of citizens to improve safety.
The UN Global Road Safety Week is a biennial global campaign on road safety organized by the World Health Organization. It brings together governments, NGOs, corporations and other organizations around the world to raise awareness of road safety and make changes that will reduce the number of road deaths.
